Lanolin (E913)

People have known about the truly magical qualities of lanolin since antiquity. Today, sheep wool acts as a raw material for the production of this substance.

It is used in medicine, because it has healing properties for open wounds and all sorts of dermatological diseases.

As a dietary supplement lanolin is known under the symbol E913. This wax is allowed to use people from infancy, it has a natural origin and does not have a negative impact on health. Means on the basis of lanolin taken to lubricate the cracks in the breast in nursing mothers.

Characteristics of the substance

The chemical composition of substance Е913 is not fully known at the present time, it is very complex and is a combination of free high molecular weight alcohols and their esters with higher fatty acids.

The main quality of lanolin can be considered its emulsifying ability, due to which it retains 2 times more moisture than its weight.

By leaching sheep wool today, almost the entire volume of this substance is obtained. This method involves the process of washing in a hot solution of water with an alkali of sheep wool before the appearance of an emulsion. This emulsion contains saponified and non-washed fat, mucus, wax and protein components. The smell of this emulsion is very strong and unpleasant.

To obtain crude lanolin, a centrifuge technique is used and the subsequent processing of the substance obtained using phosphoric acid. At the very end of the process, a specific smell is removed from the obtained wax, it is cleaned of all kinds of impurities, flavored and bleached.

The result is a mass similar to ointment, very viscous, yellowish-brown, with a specific aroma, but devoid of taste. This wax is perfectly soluble in chloroform, carbon, acetone, various esters.

The average solubility of the substance is observed in an alcoholic environment, but in an aqueous medium, E913 wax is completely insoluble. The melting point of a substance with the E913 index is 35-37 degrees.

Impact on the human body

As a food additive, E913 is considered to be a substance completely harmless to health. In very rare cases, lanolin is an allergic reaction in the form of a skin rash. However, in the food sector on the basis of the E913 additive, most of them are processing fruit-vegetable mixtures. But in the field of cosmetology there is a lot of lanolin.

Also, food supplement E913 does not have nutritional value, but is very useful as a drug.

This wax can often also be used to lubricate pans and bakeware, soak wrapping materials in the food sector. When adding a substance to the mixture for processing fruit and vegetable groups, there is a significant increase in the shelf life of these products. E913 is present in candy icing, dragee, chocolate products, flour pastry pastry, coffee beans, chewing gum and nuts.

But the use of lanolin is not limited to the food industry. In the cosmetic industry, it is an excellent component of many face creams, lotions and gels for the face and body, bath foams, masks, conditioners and shampoos for hair. This substance perfectly softens rough skin by rubbing the funds that contain it in its composition.

In the pharmacological industry, E913 additive is used in laxatives, for healing patches and ointments, this substance is widely applicable in the chemical industry.

Lanolin or E913 food additive is a permitted component of food in almost all countries of the world, including the countries of the European Union, Ukraine, Russia and America.
